CyanogenMod 6.1.0 Release Candidates

October 28th, 2010

We’ve just released the latest iteration of CM, 6.1.0-RC1! This is a release candidate, but it’s definitely capable of being your daily driver and we are very focused on fixing bugs quickly.

You’ll find some really great features in this release like Pedlar’s notification powerbar, insane performance boosts on all platforms (install SetCPU if you want to take it further), powerful new features in the camera app, new email features, FM radio support (contributed by the MIUI team, and a whole lot of other great stuff!

As always, this was a great collaboration between a lot of people and we are only as good as the community. This is your ROM, so help make it the best it can be!

You can get the latest via ROM Manager, or head over to the forums for full installation info. New RC builds will be available in the experimental forum for each device as it hits the mirrors.

What’s up with CM?

September 19th, 2010

I apologize for not keeping the site up to date, I’m a slacker :) We also had a database issue and lost the last post about 6.0′s release, if you were wondering why it went missing.

6.1 is the current work-in-progress and is coming together nicely. There’s a few new features like touch-to-focus in the camcorder, dismiss notifications by swiping, kernel updates for most devices, and improved performance. There will also be support for a few new devices- Acer Liquid, HTC Wildfire and Samsung Vibrant. My eye is also on the new HTC phones that are about to get released like the G2.

A lot of people ask me about adding support for their phone, but we can only support phones that we actually own. The CM team is always looking for new hackers to join up with us to add support for their favorite device. Get in touch with me if you’d like to help.

CyanogenMod is open source. The quality of code being added to CM has vastly improved because of the code review system that we’ve put in place, Gerrit. It’s the same system used by Google to manage the Android Open Source Project. It allows anyone to submit code to the project in a highly-visible way and gives us a way to examine and improve it before it’s actually merged. We want your code, so send us your patches. If there’s something you don’t like, change it.

Nightly builds of CM are always available if you’re brave and want to try out the latest code. If you’re running nightly builds, the best way to stay up to date on new changes is to follow @cmsrc on Twitter.

Our user base is approaching a quarter of a million users. This project has come a long way :) Thanks for all the support, we are only as strong as the community!

CyanogenMod-6 Progress

June 30th, 2010

It’s been just under a week since Google released Froyo (Android 2.2) into the open-source world and we’ve made great progress on CyanogenMod-6 already. Approximately 20 of us on the CM team are working hard on merging all of the community-developed extras in, as well as porting to new devices. Google did a great job and really gave us the best foundation to start from this time around.

Here’s where we stand so far.. Most of the CyanogenMod extras have been merged. Some features are being reworked (like trackball settings), new device ports are well underway. The first devices to see CM6 experimental releases will most likely be the Nexus One and Droid simply because those are the devices that “just work”. The Dream/Sapphire port has everything working but one small issue remains. Wes Garner has the Slide port well underway. I don’t have a status report of the Desire, Incredible, and Evo versions at this time.

I’m expecting that we should have some experimental releases by the weekend, but please don’t spam us asking for ETAs.. We are just as excited to get this out as you are :)

You can follow our progress on Github or drop by irc.freenode.net in #cyanogenmod or #koush.

Regarding updates to CM5.. A small update will be coming this weekend to fix a few bugs but the focus will remain on CM6!

Thanks to everyone who has been supporting us with testing, bugfixing, code, new features, and of course donations. CM is what it is because of the community. Thank you!
