CyanogenMod 4.1.99

October 5th, 2009

Finally now that the dust has settled.. The installation process is slightly more complicated the first time around, and you’ll need to agree and understand HTC’s licensing terms.

No CM Updater support just yet, but that’s next.

Check out my thread on XDA for the scoop:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567610

  • Scammah

    Thank you for your hard work.

  • Jason AKA Syx6sic

    keep it up man

  • PencilPusherz

    Glad to see you back in the game…I’ll be flashing tomorrow after I read thoroughly.

  • sunsguy

    Ya Baby! Its back. Don’t worry about the extra step. Its easy. I say with all this press cyanogenmod gets even bigger!

  • InEo

    Great work! Thank you. Will test it in a few minutes…

  • Akashwani

    You rock, as always. keep up the good work! Your ROM loose a little favour but it will always be the most popular among those for whom Android is meant for… keep up!!!

  • http://thewichitacomputerguy.com Phil

    Stuck both HTC & 4.1.99 build on phone, (didn’t rename either) used 1.4 pimped out to flash HTC ADP1 build first, didn’t reboot, went straight to the CM 4.1.99 build, flashed it, rebooted and BOOM! Up and running!

  • Arno

    Awesome! I worship you, Steve! :)

  • Matt

    Thanks, there has to be a better way to get feedback than xda….reading that thread live was like pulling teeth. I’ve gotten alot of help at that place and useful posts do pop up…but seriously that was ridiculous, how many people didn’t even read your instructions. Install was about as simple as it gets.

  • ElijahCMenifee

    Great work, thanks for all your time. Just got around to rooting my G1 for the first time early Sunday morning with 4.04 and while on irc#cyanogenmod getting help found out about this release and nearly managed to stay up for it (fell asleep ~1.5 hours before the xda links were there…) If i had known your recovery and images were so easy to use I would have rooted months ago ;-)

  • Dylan

    I lost root, I don’t get it. I followed the instructions…. I thought.

  • Dylan

    Haha, realized I had originally flashed recovery 1.4 wrong… I think, went thru all the steps from 1 to re-root then “correctly” flash recovery. Now have 4.1.99 working perfectly. Thanks a million Cyanogen for all the hard work you have put into all of this. I will be buying you a few beers!

  • rich0

    I saw that you’re thinking about going experimental only. That would be a real loss. Certainly, though I can see you going as-is with regard to support.

    Consider two forms or lists – a technical/contrib list and a user list. The problem in xda is that you get one or two 1000 post threads. With a dedicated forum or list it will be a lot more organized.

    If you do go experimental, would you be interested in working with a few contributors on a stable fork (which would do what you’re already doing with stable releases – maybe with additional fix-only revisions)?

  • John

    Is it necessary to use the SDK to flash the HTC image, and/or a partitioned SD card? I’m running a MT3G cyanogen recovery 1.4 with 4.1.11.1 with an unpartitioned SD card. When I try to flash the HTC ion recovery image, I get E:Error in /sdcard/signed-google_ion-ota-14721.zip
    (Status 7)
    Installation aborted.

  • Andrew Ward

    @john
    I’m using a HTC Magic of Vodafone and was getting the same error message as you when trying to install the HTC 1.6 recovery image from this source:
    http://developer.htc.com/google-io-device.html

    I read all of the 45 pages and was able to solve the problem by following this post:
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4666075#post4666075

    In conclusion the htc recovery image was the issue and using this one instead:
    http://www.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=enomther/ROM/&file=HTC_ADP_1.6_DRC83_rooted_base.zip
    was the fix.

  • Les

    Huge congrats and thanks for 4.1.99. Don’t let complainers and those who can’t read instructions get to you. I installed perfectly and easily to my G1 following the simple proceedure you spelled out. Great mod fast and more stable than 4.1.11.1. You continue to make my G1 worth owning.

    FYI: The huge silly thread at xda is because of your popularity and stuff. I’m sure you have been attracting lots of people new to your mod and modding in general.

    With fame comes ‘fans’ and that has a downside too. Just ignore them and focus on development. Thanks again for your killer roms.

  • Niall

    If you stop enjoying it – move on. It would be our loss.

  • john

    @ andrew. Thanks! I’ll try that when I get home. I fugured it must be something like that because I also have a g1 and it flashed with no problems

  • Andrew Ward

    Thats OK john. The solution was burried around pages of crap in xda so it made sense to post it here where there are very few posts in comparison.

    Also @cyanogen:
    Mic volume (and I think speaker volume) is still really bad on my htc magic with this rom. I had to do the whole audiopara fix again via the dev toolkit:
    “adb remount
    adb shell rm /system/etc/AudioPara4.csv
    adb push AudioPara4.csv /system/etc/
    adb shell reboot”

    I think it must be to do with differences between the magic and G1 hardware. Would be really nice if this could be perminantly fixed.

  • nando camilli

    how do i go from4.0.4 to the newest mod…..can i do it thru updater?……what are the steps for this process..

  • http://www.cmisak.com CraigM

    Thanks for the continued dev on your ROMS. I am having a problem same as 4.1.11.1 & now 4.1.99…. the home screen just randomly goes blank. Nothing FC’s i will back out of an app and all my icons are gone :( only way to get them back is restart… it will let me open the tray and add them back but will clear those changes and go back to the ones i lost.

    Also i have no suggestions in my keyboard all settings are turned on all three dont better keyboard, htc input, standard. I will when i go through the tutorial but no where else

    Other than these two thing most evrytying else looks pretty strong.

    Any suggestion?

    Glad to see you sorted the legal mess out Cyanogen. Although when we download the adp1 “recovery image” from HTC site, we have to accept a license agreement, and it contains terms restricting the use of Google binaries. Effectively we are now infringing copyrites by loading the image on something other than “Android Developer Phone 1″ (say, stock G1s). Not that I care about that though. Certainly Google cannot C&D all of us out there :-P

  • twisteroid Ambassador

    Also the license agreement states “except in conjunction with third party software that makes up the Android system image, you may not combine any part of the Google Software with other software”. I suppose that a Cyanogen rom is the “third party software” in question, and we are allowed to combine Google binaries with cyanogen roms.

  • PyjamaPete

    Eek! The 1.6 HTC Recovery image doesn’t take:
    E:Multiple firmware images
    E:Can’t store radio image

    I guess I will have to sit this out for now :’”(

  • PyjamaPete

    Follow up: Immediately after choosing a manual reset – it said Updating radio, then booted into the unboxin pic. Continued with the instructions, up until the second reboot.
    Successfully placed a call

  • http://www.cmisak.com CraigM

    Happened again… all my icons *poof* disappear off my home screen. Everything still works, make calls, receive calls emails apps everything works just my home screen goes blank (with wallpaper still there)….

    This time with a different app but it can be everything from Settings, Alarm (last night), Gmail, CraigsList Notifier (this morning), Browser (last night)

    Please help happened on 4.1.9.2 , 4.1.1 , 4.1.11.1 and now 4.1.99 couldn’t remember the other point whatevers last night on my previous post.

    Thank you for your help in advance i’m on a MyTouch 3G TMO with 4gb class 6 FAT32, ext4, Linux-Swap partitions

  • http://www.cmisak.com CraigM

    @nando camilli

    Follow the instructions from Cyanogen here
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567610

    worked on my MyTouch don’t know what you have but the updater doesn’t work right now like it use to.

    Hi cyanogen,
    I just flashed the cy 4.1.99, but I don’t like the circular corner in the top of the UI. could you please tell me how to change it to square corner?

    Thanks for your hard work.

  • Andy

    @CraigM Did you try doing a fix_permissions or a wipe?
    Just go into the recovery screen go to terminal and enter fix_permissions. This *should* speed up your phone if you have permission issues. Also doing a wipe may help but you might loose your apps/settings.

    Do you have a lot of widgets on your home screens? Maybe one of those is slowing it down.

  • http://www.cmisak.com CraigM

    @Andy

    I did a wipe betwen 4.1.11.1 and 4.1.99. How do i type stuff in the terminal with a MyTouch (always wondered that for some other stuff) soft keyboard doesn’t come up.

    But I did do a “Fix ext FileSystem” I have NO! idea what that does or did but i did it

    Thanks again for any info.

    @Cpedia,

    I’m with you, leave the round-corners on the Palm-Pre… I don’t like them on my Android.

    http://www.JoeLevi.com

  • JoelOFH

    @CraigM

    Hold the “Menu” key while in terminal for the keyboard to appear.

    @Cyanogen

    I am incredibly happy to see you’re still in the game. :)

  • xLight

    It seem that very unstable when using auto app2sd.
    I have flash 3 times.
    The first and second With auto app2sp ,the system running very very very damn slow. Even I can’t use the phone.
    The third ,I delete the ext2 partition on sdcard. All things works fast.

  • Robert m.

    Awsome a bit slow… but awsome. I like the 4.0.4 its smoother and stable though…thanks again cyan your the man dude!

  • Craig

    Once I’m done I just restore my nandroid backup I made? I’ll still have 4.1.99 and it won’t go back to 4.1.11.1, right?

  • http://www.cmisak.com CraigM

    @JoelOFH

    I’m going to have to play the idiot card *played world to see… I don’t get a keyboard

    Nothing i’ve already tried the hold menu thing i’ve tried every key i have i get werid “[e4 /” stuff or something like that when i start pressing the search adn power button (which power doesn’t do anything either)

    How do i get a keyboard when pressing and holding home while a boot…. going into 1.4 recovery and going to console. cuz i can’t get it to work

    I need my hand held i apologize in advanced

    PS got 4.1.9999999 installed all is going well so far but only had it for about 30 min

    thank you cyan

  • Robert m.

    I’m wondering does anyone know if you can use the recovery image 1.6 with the 4.0.4 mod that would be cool cause that rom is crazy stable. Give me some light…

  • http://www.es-android.com Tivisoft

    Hi, just installed 4.1.999, it’s great! Works fast & fine!

    Just a problem with keyboard. Pushed spanish keychar & keylayout as I did after all wipes I made, but in some cases I get wrong keyboards inpud (@ instead of ç, and others), i.e. when typing on google widget search! Now, I’m typing from my Dream and the keyboard works fine…

    Any idea? Do I need different keychar & keylayout for Donut?

  • Andrew Ward

    @robert
    I highly doubt that you can use 4.0.4 with the 1.6 recovery image. It wont have any of the google app backup stuff built in, and as it comes with google apps it is illegal.

  • yz99

    Does anyone knows if there is a way to NOT rotate the home screen? I have my phone in hand all the time and it kept on flip-flop orientations, and many time when I get ready to do something on the phone, I have to wait for that 2 seconds lag of home screen rotation…

    other than that, love the ROM.

  • http://www.JoeLevi.com Joe Levi

    Bugs:

    1. Still cannot upload to YouTube.
    2. Cannot pair with any Bluetooth device (Prius, Motorola headset)

    Anyone else having these problems?

    – Joe Levi

  • http://www.JoeLevi.com Joe Levi

    @yz99,

    Settings, Sound & Display, uncheck the “switch orientation automatically when rotating phone” under Display Settings.

    – Joe Levi

  • http://www.JoeLevi.com Joe Levi

    @Robert M,

    The “1.6 Recovery Image” isn’t the “Cyanogen Recovery Image” that we’re used to. It’s the HTC developer image so that we get our Google Apps back (without violating Google’s redistribution rights).

    – Joe Levi

  • http://www.cmisak.com CraigM

    Bug,

    Had it on 4.1.99 (on all keyboards) and 4.1.999 it doesn’t auto correct as you type… the dictionary acts like its empty. I can use the HTC input metod at least with the newest 4.1.999 but no other keyboard will auto correct, and none of them will remember a saved word into the custom dictionary.

    Better Keyboard might be to blame for this one but it worked just fine with 4.1.11.1

    Any thoughts?

  • http://www.JoeLevi.com Joe Levi

    4.1.999 Bugs Update:

    1. Still cannot upload to YouTube.
    2. Bluetooth now pairs properly.

    Anyone else having problems uploading to YouTube?

    – Joe Levi

  • Jmoney

    .999 is fantastic. Status toolbar fix works perfect, and the ROM speed is fastest yet. I appreciate it!!

  • deathmonkey

    4.1.999
    ——–

    Did a regular flash from 4.1.99 to 4.1.999.

    Browser works fine (seems faster)
    Youtube upload works.
    Creating a new album on Picasa still brings up “There was a problem trying to create an album”. Uploading a picture to Picasa brings up “Waiting to retry 1 minute” Every time i retry. Im not sure if this is from Googles end or the ROM’s. Other then that, I love Cyanogen. Thank you so much for your hard work! WOO WOO!

  • yz99

    @Joe Levi,

    Thanks for answering my question. However, that would completely turn off the rotation. What I’d like to see is the default behavor of “stock” rom, where the screen rotate inside the apps but NOT at home screen.

  • kLyon

    Followed the instructions exactly to install 4.1.999; everything went smoothly. Unfortunately, the phone is tediously slow – not even in the ballpark of 4.1.11.1; it’s barely usable – and with lots of force closes. Is there any other step I could/should take? Is anyone else experiencing this problem? My sd card is formatted with the swap, application, and main folder(s); I did the wipe per the instructions, but didn’t do anything to the sd card.

  • http://www.cmisak.com CraigM

    @kLyon

    What phone are you on? and what recovery image did you use?

    reason i ask is because i went from 4.1.11.1 => 4.1.99 => to 4.1.999 on my MyTouch 3G TMO and things are working out well (except for those few issues i’ve mentioned above)

    I’m not the most experienced but I’ll do what i can to help. Sometimes i pull the battery and hold the power button (2min) to clear any remaining power in the board, than after some use on the new ROM go into the Recovery Mod and clicked the “repair ext filesystems” not sure what it does but its seemed to have fixed my home screen disappearing issue might help you…

    More experienced back me up or nay say me please. Still trying to type stuff into the Console in Recovery menu press for keyboard doesn’t work so i can’t type in the fix permissions command.
