Actually, this release 4.2.8 has been the most stable release for me since 4.1.9999! And whatever you did in 4.2.8 finally has OBEX Push Protocol working (altho the changelog doesn’t say anything was touched?)! YEA!!! Home screen doesn’t freeze anymore (altho it drops in diaganolly now but it drops in super quick!) LOL. Very nice release! I updated kinda differently this time tho…I used the cmupdater and I actually used the Alt+F function after updating to 4.2.8. Whether the Alt+F did anything, I don’t know, but I haven’t had any real issues…If I do get random reboots, then I’ll just have to wipe and reinstall clean. *knocks on wood* Good job and more beer on the way!

v4.2.8 has been the best yet for my G1! Though I’m not sure which release it was introduced, the ability to lock “Home” into memory has been invaluable. All in all, great work! And yes, I donated. :)

    Re: James Wells (#24 p2)

As far as I can tell, I have the notification sounds set correctly. Is there an easy way to verify that they’re all set; because the random music thing is getting a bit annoying.

  • Kevin

    Two thing I’ve noticed is
    1. That when returning to the home screens launcher has a problem loading widgets and the icon where the widgets where say “Problem loading widgets” So I have to delete them off the home screens then put them back on. The wierd thing is that that google search bar widget isn’t affected by this yet the power control one is yet them both being widgets made by google and not a 3rd party software downloaded off of the market.
    2. After installing the Eclair lock theme for 4.2.8 that when you have the option of “Home, then sleep” enabled from Spare Parts->End button behavior that when you hit the end button (red button) nothing happens yet if you have “Go to sleep” selected from Spar Parts->End button behavior the phone will go to sleep then.

Also thanks for all your hard work. I greatly appreciate it.

For the mysterious music fix – it looks like the system audio files get removed during the flash process. With no audio, the system plays music files for notifications.

Download the audio resources from Cyanogen’s website and install to the SD card to remedy.

  • Mickey G

    Mysterious music issue solved.

For some reason, the system audio files were removed during the flash/update. Notifications are then using music files.

Download the audio resources from the Download tab on Cyanogen’s web page. Re-install the files to the SD card.

  • Mike

I had a terrible problem, the text messages (Chinese) i sent were all messy code.

  • g1love

How do you download eclair lock screen???????

  • Michael Adick

    @Mike,
a fix is being prepared by CM for the unicode problem

  • BG

Hi… good job on the update… like the gui… n it runs smoothly… only problem i have is updating google maps… any idea on what i need 2 do to fix dat…. it keeps sayin installation unsuccessfull

  • http://war-lords.net Authority (Sam Crowe)

Wow dude. I was on Andrid Market, and did a quick search to root my G1. And this was the First Topic, Looked at the Read Me(Wiki) was EXTREMELY EASY to follow. I dont know how I have been able to run my phone without root. Its like Night and Day. Thanks a bunch this is a great Mod. Your doing a fantastic job, Keep it up!

  • Guru

The new rom is good :-) tnx for that.

But, the music player crashes, can that be fixed?

    Guru

  • Cam

Awesome build. Soooooo fast! I was a little nervous about the music player starting itself “randomly” but it was because I didn’t set my notifications up. Simple fix, haven’t noticed any issues with that since. Other problem I initially experienced was the taskbar not dragging down, but it seems to be working great now!

  • Tim

    Nice looks

  • mobilepgk

    CM,
    not so fast :)
let’s us cherish moments with new build for a while, before we hit with one more build! ;)
    thanks a lot.

  • SDriversInn

Thank you so much. I’m pretty new to all this and started with 4.2.7.1. I followed the Wiki and had no problems whatsoever. Things worked exactly as described. After that I applied the 10mb RAM hack with appreciable results. Using CM updater I upgraded to 4.2.8. Things work well, but the new ROM is noticeably slower for me. Possibly this is because the 10mb RAM hack is no longer in effect. Is there a corresponding hack for this new version? Also, I’ve never repartitioned my SD card. Is that necessary or important? I’m overwhelmed by the amount of information on the XDA forum. Can anyone point me in a specific direction regarding either topic?

Thank you in advance for your assistance. And thank you, Steve, for all of your great work. (Donation to follow…)

  • SDriversInn

Oh, I am such a newb that I forgot to mention that I’m using a MT3G.

  • guru

    RaNdom reboot.

  • zambarici

i’ve noticed exactly what kevin said. For exemple: i use estrongs task manager, i kill all the applications and when i return to the home screen it loads very slow and than i must wait for the clock, dialer and the other widgets to load too. Any ideea how to repair this?

  • Manish Shrestha

I don’t know whether it is just my phone or everyone has the same problem. Whenever i try to return home after executing any apps in any version of cyanogen mod, the force close option pops up. Yah and it is very slow when trying to return home after executing any apps.
    Is this issue fixable?

  • Mat Davis

In case anyone else upgrading sees the same thing, I just installed 4.2.8 (not 4.2.8.1) and when I booted for the first time none of my apps from the market seemed to be there (and neither did the market) but I rebooted and everything reappeared and seems to be fine.

Haven’t had time to do much else but wanted to post this in case it helps someone else.

  • ACTPOHABT

Music player starts and stops playing music by itself randomly.

  • SpiderMonkey34

@zambarici, Manish and anyone else having this problem…

I had the same issue of slow returns to the home screen, icons taking anywhere from 5 seconds to minutes to load. To fix the problem I simply switched to the default Home app. Previously I was running DXtop and over time, quality just deteriorated. It would take DXtop longer to return to the home screen, it would lag horribly at times and there was the constant reloading of icons.

I then tried GDE and it was fine for a couple of days. Then an update released that made that worse than DXtop ever was. So I went to the default Home app and I haven’t had any serious problems. Last night my phone did randomly reboot though, which sucked totally.

Anyways, if any of you guys are running an alternative home app, try switching to the default app and see if it makes a difference. If you have a lot of widgets running. cut down the number used and see if that makes a difference too.

  • http://www.jacobspaulsen.com Jacob S Paulsen

My experience with the new ROM has been poor. It takes FOREVER to load any of my home screens and SUPER long to load widgets.

    Very Frustrating

  • turk

SDriversInn, doing the partition to you SD card will improve performance, I would recommend it. Good luck!

  • SDriversInn

turk, thank you for that advice. Can you point me in a specific direction for the process. I’ve seen several variations, and I’m not sure what to look for. For whatever it’s worth, I’ve got the 4GB SD card that came with the MT3G and am running Vista SP2 (32bit) primarily, but I dual boot Sabayon linux (in case that is somehow relevant). I will probably upgrade my SD card in the near future, but I’m in no rush.

Also, I’ve been directed to the XDA thread for the updated RAM hack, and things seem much better after completing that procedure.

Thanks again to all involved. This community is really something special, and I’m very glad I made the leap to Android.

  • Jordan

Eclair lock screen please! Awesome build thanks

  • eric

dialer does not work in landscape mode. it always force closes.

  • greg b

Everything works great but when I have my head phones plugged into the usb and turn the music off then a few minutes later I unplug the head phones the stock music player starts but doesn’t show up in the notification bar you have to open the music program push play then push stop. It sucks cause say you unplug for a phone call music starts up over call. Same problem with 4.2.8.1 went back to 4.2.5. I hope you Ger it resolved

  • stan

Still can’t update Google maps I need help on this

  • Doug

    Hi there,
I am running 4.2.8. This issue occurs in other 4.2.*

I have partitioned my sdcard for app2sd and it is working OK. I also upgrade my 2nd partition to ext4. But now occasionally, my phone just hangs randomly.
After rebooting the phone the SDcard is gone. I have to remove/insert the sdcard seceral times to make it recognized. And then I need to reboot it again.
But then when everything seems to be OK, I cannot start any apps installed previsouly in the sdcard.

My question is: Is this because of my sdcard? I have the PNY 8GB class 4 (made in Japan from Bestbuy).
Does anybody experience the same sort of issue?

    Thanks for helping

  • greg b

    Mt3g by the way

  • Gustav

How is it that my mytouch is running so slow and everyone elses phone is running blazing fast on 4.2.8?? Im running compcache too! Should i wipe and reinstall? I have many apps i dont want to lose and sms texts as well… how can i back al that up?

  • marcelo

I’m having random reboots. no aparent cause.
    anyone knows anything about?

  • http://www.twisted-tech.webs.com Michael

Is there going to be any attention to the google maps problem each new update since like 4.2.7 i see atleast 2 – 5 people not being able to update, i myself, can’t update it :\ Please smeone help out

  • william

also getting the random music thing… notification sounds are set correctly as far as i can tell. running 4.2.8, not 4.2.8.1. has it been fixed since?

  • Everett

I too have been getting the random reboot issue for the last few point-releases, including the new latest. I’ve even tried a fresh wipe and flash, to no avail.

It sometimes happens when the phone is sitting idle, sometimes while I’m on a call, and perhaps 1/4 times when I plug in a USB cable.

  • Asa Long

My phone is going F’n haywire. I’m getting random reboots…..Rebooted when I tried to use the mobile buzz widget, Twidroid, Gmail from my notifications bar. Pretty much when I try to do anything I normally do.

It’ll reboot, then reboot again, before the other reboot is even finished, and then turn completely off on it’s own. After that I can’t even turn the phone back on unless I take the battery out and put it back in. A couple of times I had weird looking white screens during bootup.

Been doing this since i installed 4.2.8. STILL doing it on 4.2.8.1

My opinion is that this particular build is BUSTED, and I’m going back to 4.2.7.1 until further notice.

  • Azereal

Anyone having this problem? My phone keeps reseting, and sometimes takes a few boots to start up, or it seems to start up when connected to power. It’s battery life has dropped off considerably in like a week and the the time it takes to charge.

  • Cam

Ok so since yesterday, I’ve had some random system freezes and reboots. The random music problem has also resurfaced. Sometimes when I open the Music Player, the music starts right up without me pressing the play button. I was able to replicate the problem by killing the music player in task killer, then opening music back up.

The only other time I can’t explain was when my phone was on silent and it started blasting Minor Threat during my management final when my gmail arrived. I thought silent mode would kill the notifications as well, but it seems that notifications in this build are controlled by media volume? Not sure, just a thought.

Still, I am very happy with my cyanogen-powered g1!

  • Jehu

Better performance than former ROM, but still these problems:

    - Music player starts and stops playing music by itself randomly.
    - Auto-Sync not working, i have to uncheck/check it manually for sync

Hope, it will be fixed soon.

  • Asa Long

Yes Azereal I’m having the same problem, except mine’s worse.

  • ob3

I’m with a lot of you guys. This is on a G1. A ton of random freezes. When someone tries to call me, sms me, I use the browser, I use the search bar, I rotate the screen, upload anything, etc.

I’m going back to 4.2.7.1 too. 4.2.8.x has been an unusually rough ride.

    Hope this helps!

  • miamig1

I like the ROM its been rocking, i just instale 4.2.8.1 and everytime some one calls i get a call not sent. not sure why

  • Matt105

For the longest time, and through many CM updates, I have had a problem on my MyTouch3G. It seems like once every 30 minutes, when I go to unlock phone, it just goes to a blank screen with no icons/widgets. I then have to wait about 30 seconds and the icons will finally reappear along with the widgets. This seems trivial but considering it happens like 20 times a day, it is madly frustrating. I don’t know if this is a CM problem, an android problem, or a MT3G problem. Can anyone shed some light?

On the latest CM build, I have also been getting many force closes by Google Maps app running in the background for Latitude. It didn’t do this 1 version ago, so I don’t know what the heck is going on >_>

  • Matt105

Just to follow up. I just updated from 4.2.8 to 4.2.8.1, and after 5 minutes of use, my phone has randomly rebooted twice :( I’m gonna try to downgrade I think…

  • Joeg05

I just rooted my phone last night, and flashed 4.2.8.1, and now for some reason I cannot send text messages. I can receive them fine, but get an ‘unable to send’ error every time. If anyone can shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated.

  • MJ

Great work thanks a lot! only problem I have is the home screen takes a long time to load every time I exit from an app.

  • Andrew

I currently have version 4.2.6 installed on my G1. Can I jump right to 4.2.8.1 or do I have to do each update in between?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • dancingwombat

Last night I upgraded from 4.1.11.1 to 4.2.8.1 . I followed the wiki and also did a wipe. Everything is great, except I also get the “random” music. I think I’ve set my notification sounds correctly, but the music still starts. It does not display in the status bar, but if I open the music player, “play” the music, and then “pause” the music, then all sound stops. Events that triggered the music so far: First time I ran CM updater and checked for updates; first time I opened the gallery and deleted a photo.
