CyanogenMod-4.2.9

December 18th, 2009

This is a great release in my opinion. The random music and crashes are fixed. I’ve backported lots of Eclair filling to the build, and fixed quite a few bugs.

Get it with CM Updater!

This is a great release though it shows 3 issues for me:
    - a few FC due to lack of memory. 95mo :-(
    - no enter key in terminal
    - still no MMS since donut on europe (not a pb of apn, ot worked before)

  • Peter

Apps which can regulate screen brightness (“Brightness Level” and “Aldiko Reader”) no longer work with 4.2.9.1. The brightness can only be regulated in the settings. I’ve gone back to 4.2.8.1 where this works properly.

    HTC Magic (32B)

  • Phil Stowell

Awesome rom. Thanks very much for all your hard work :) . The only issue I have since 4.2.8 and still in 4.2.9.1 is that VPN has stopped working.

  • Hellfire

Ok i got another issue… the widget of the calendar doesn’t update the day…

  • kev94

    This Rom’s great !
But I got 1 issue : it seems that GPS doesn’t work, either in Maps or in Sygic mobile maps 9. Can’t connect to, can’t find my localization.
Any solution to fix this ?

  • Blurblur

    Damn,nice rom!

but i got several problem from 4.2.8.1 to 4.2.9.1,

first i got random reboot when idling and when im running google goggle

    can you fix it…thx

    btw im using HTC Magic

  • CCShermCraig

@DancingWombat I have enabled Apps2Sd and do see a noticeable improvement however it is definitely still sluggish – more so than with previous ROM builds. Thanks for the tip, any other suggestions are welcome!! :D

  • slowjazz

Ok.. so overall this is a nice ‘idea’ rom. Handcent put out a fix and it appears to be better. But.. based on alot of postings, it looks like there are alot of problems. Is there a new rom coming real soon? (ie: don’t want to back down to 4.6 or .7) Or is Dawg the most stable/better option at this point?

  • Brandon

Just want to know how to change boot image

  • grey

Uhh, as many others have stated – music app will stop when it is in the background (whether pressing home, launching another app such as maps, etc.). It may take 10 seconds or so for this to happen (because nothing is ever fast on android).

If you launch say, navigation and *then* launch music and leave it there, it will keep playing. It also loses state of where in the song it was, so you’ll be back at the beginning of the song.

If this was the “fix” to a bug, it’s terrible. I had no issues with music up until 4.2.9.1 after the supposed fix.

  • Paul

Buggier and Buggier… 4 second delay on incoming calls; hear the ringer, popup caller ID info lags… lots of force close messages. menus are snappier, but loading and switching between apps is very slow. Market = almost impossible to download apps, I have stuff selected to download that have been sitting there “downloading” for days. I have to hit cancel, hit “download” over and over, some times it works, most times it doesn’t. I’ve given up on “updating” apps that have updates waiting… This has been going on the last few ROMs.

  • Jon Po

I personally think that 4.2.5 is the most stable for me so far. I’ve tried every rom in the list and all but 4.2.5 seems to make my phone reboot at random times and I have an issue from 4.2.6 till current version, the issues is every time I back out of an app my screen looses all icons for about a half a second then reappear.

  • Jon Po

I meant a half a minute (30 SECONDS). Just trying to correct my last post. Sorry!

  • Tony

Please, PLEASE, fix Bluetooth OBEX File Transfer protocol! Hate the fact that it does NOT work in 4.2.9.1 – also VPN would be great to have again! Thanks and I can’t wait for the next release!

  • dancingwombat

    @CCShermCraig:
Glad to know it helped. What kind of SD card are you using? The G1 came with a class 1 card when I got mine. I’ve seen CM on a class 1 card, and it was slow. I had a class 4 card in mine, and it was a big improvement. I upgraded to a class 6 card, and that helped improve it over that class-4 speed.

  • Federico

@JonPo: same issue as you regarding the icons with 4.2.9.1
Music stops when opening some apps, feels sluggish when switching apps, especially music.

  • http://N/A Paradigm

Okay, perhaps I’ve done something incorrectly, but I’ve updated and applied kernel patch 4.2.9.1. Since going to Cyanogen from stock, I’ve noticed 2 things:

    1) The only videos that will play, are the ones I record myself. Anything downloaded, in any format, will show a “Media Error: This video cannot be played” message, and if played from the YouTube app, will actually play for a few seconds, before showing that message. Both video and audio continue until I hit “okay” it then closes.

    2) I am unable to delete any files referencing Google Maps, in order to attempt uninstall/reinstall procedures obtained from various forums. Is it possible that I have lost root in the process?

    Cheers mate,

    P.

  • stabu

google talk doesnt seem to work. cant get msgs

  • http://none cysco24

I was having many of the issues that other have had. Slow, lags, going back to home and waiting for icons. I was upgrading from one cyanogen rom to the other. I did a fresh, 1.5 cupcake all the way up to the latest rom and WOW. This thing is FAST !!! Everything is super smooth. Thanks Cy

  • Scott Swain

I’m starting to give up hope that this device (G1) *can* ever be truly fast and stable at the same time because the hardware is so underpowered. I’m merely biding my time until one of those snapdragon-powered phones comes to T-mobile. Hopefully, they will have enough built-in ROM & RAM to ensure fast and stable running.

  • guru

I found something. The music player does not seem to check for the default headset inserted. Still uses the loud speaker to play music.

  • mobilepgk

I had repetitive problem where google mail application failed to send a message. When I hit send button, n/w was not available. On getting n/w back, I was expecting the pending mail to be sent. But the mail remains, and so does the “Sending” tag as well.

For time being reverting to 2.4.8.1 to see if problem goes away.

Thanks CM for excellent work so far.

  • Thomas

Music program force closing after i flashed this rom. I tried to flash back to 4.2.8.1 still nothing. I cant seem to find any information. This is the log.

  • CCShermCraig

@DancingWombat I have a class 6 card so now excuses or worries there. I actually have another question that’s been nagging at me regarding CM ROMS that maybe you can answer? It seems that my apps in the “drawer” refresh almost every time I open the drawer causing me to inadvertently open the wrong app on a consistent basis. I don’t notice this on other ROMS. Do you know what this might be? Thanks again for all of your assistance!

  • R A

Nice work as always! But, with this update the alarm wont sound any more, it vibrates but does not sound.

    Thanks

  • kny789

same issue with the music player – cannot play in the background. Whether opening it then minimising to home screen or opening an app like sudoku to play while listening – even messaging. Also very random bug encountered only once, got a call during music play, answered it, but music kept playing over the call. (all this was done with headset in btw)

however… superfast! seriously… this is smooth. It’s the only reason i havent downgraded to fix the music issue as i’m content to listen to music without games for a while

  • eric

    where are the FAQ ?
    don’t wanna post everything here.

  • Eddie

G1 4.2.9.1, XP Pro SP3: 4.2.9.1 cannot mount. PC does not see phone.

  • http://www.klaq.com DRK

Got a problem with Bluetooth. Using a Jabra BT3030 and had no problems with a very old and out-dated JF build. Love this build, nice and fast, and it’ll play media files over the bluetooth with no problems — but I can’t hear phone calls. I can hear the phone “click on” and it plays the ring and hang-up tones over the headset, says it’s hooked up, too; but there is no audio from any actual phone call.

  • http://www.klaq.com DRK

Eddie, had the same problem. I rebooted the phone and it worked fine.

  • schizo

I am experiencing similar issues. I haven’t tried the music player, but Pandora stops when I switch to other apps (messaging, browser, voice search, so far).

Power Manager doesn’t always activate/deactivate wifi settings. Gmail doesn’t always sync–have to force a refresh.

Also the obvious lag when a call comes in: Caller ID doesn’t appear until about 10 seconds.

Thanks for the hard work! I’m checking for updates every day!

  • DariusMDeV

Ever since I’ve got into the 4.9 series on my G1, I’ve been late for work every day, and am now going to buy a new alarm clock. I’m currently in 4.9.1

When ever I have my HTC All-in-One Media Adapter http://bit.ly/4RowqV installed – the Alarm Clock no longer will Alarm when the adapter is plugged in. When ever I unplug the adapter, the phone’s loudspeaker starts playing Nirvana’s “About a Girl” without launching a media player, and the only way to recover is to pull battery. Here is a list of my installed apps, if that helps: http://bit.ly/66e7ui

  • Eddie

    G1 4.2.9.1 XP Pro SP3
Initial problem for me was PC not seeing phone. Reboot with no effect. Reload solved connectivity but still can’t tether. Will update.

  • aaron

Since applying the 4.2.9.1 update, my phone will not recognize any music thru the Music application, but I can view/play them in astro. Any way to fix this? How about re-installing the music app (is this possible?).
Thanks! I love our Android community!

  • zmesler

To all of you crying about how CM is buggy and bad. I had just exactly the same issues you have right how. Sms issue screen issue, market issue constant force close issue and issue issue. I even went back to some other release of somebody else. But after a while i realised what actually was wrong. You guys probably update updates, then update those updates with theme updates and so on and on. Doing so doesn’t sound wrong. However it DOES something wrong. The result are all those issues you all experience right now. I managed to resolve the issue. First you do have to have an SD with appropriate partitions. You MUST NOT EVER EVER EVER remove or unmount your SD when your phone is ON. If you need to put a movie or mp3 on the sd switch your phone off, remove SD, plug in to your PC and then copy them over. After every update is released i make a clean install. I do not update with CM Updater apart of themes. So put your stock ROM then CM Update on SD (I always format them before so your swap and ext3 are clean), WIPE twice just in case and then flash. Trust me this is no more than 15 min. All apps can downloaded again from the market. Are you worried about your sms, system settings, dictionary etc? Use MyBackupPro (it was 2 dollars i gues). And that is what i do every time. To put everything together like it was would take me MAX 30min. I have been doing so for 3 months now and never had a FC since then. All is working as desired. The new release just makes my Magic fly. Thank you

  • zmesler

However it is not possible to control brightness with any other app that standard one.

  • PatrikS

Just Donated 5Usd, hope next version will sort out my intermittent 3G issues :P

Merry Christmas & Happy new year

  • stan

still having problems with google maps not installing and have tried every method to fix it. where can i find out how to partion sd card i have been looking for it and cant seem to find it anywheres

  • IConrad01

Re: Twitter post (use T-Mobile IM app) — bloody hell, no. That thing’s a rip-off scheme at the best of times. (SMS usage rather than data? *really*?)

  • Phenix

    V4.291

“uNote” can not operate normally, check please.

  • Lars

Been using it a few days. Works fine for me so far. I mean aside from minor crashes here and there, as usual.

When are we getting 2.0? (Not just backports.)

  • Delsmore

I’ve gotten a bug where all my icons/widgets on home screen disappear and do not come back until you restart. Its happen a couple times so far.

Other than that great rom keep it up.

  • Jayjay

love this new rom but i have a few issues… just hope I can help. app store just downloads and downloads but never installs even after it says download is complete.. also lags and that one i dont understand cause sometimes the phone is super fast and then other times its like im waiting idk 5 mins just waiting for the thing to load. but i still wouldnt go back to stock. ty much and great work

  • Spfx_2000

Great ROM love it. it has turned my phone into something completely new the only thing is that when ever i connect my headphones to it, it restarts. Not really sure what thats all about. I have tried to reflash as well as wiping it but it still occurs any suggestions?

  • Paul

    @zmesler
Thank you for the info (updating over updates) = bad idea. I’m not sure why this is, but It does make sense, as every update after update after update = buggier. Here is what I did (this time). #1 Make a Nandroid backup, #2 wipe, #3 apply update (4.2.9).zip… restarted phone, did get one forceclose (for the startup app) while it was registering for Mobile Defense… First thing I’ve done was go to the market, am updating all my apps. That seems to work.

I ask if I missed a step and if its a *big* deal. step = putting the stock rom on the phone first. I believe the last time I did this it unrooted my phone, had to start the process over from scratch. I do remember whatever ROM being very fast stable. I’m curious as to what steps you take PRIOR to wipe, wipe, apply update (4.2.9).zip in case I continue to have issues.

    ThanX

  • Tsaeb

Freeze at first reboot on my G1 T-Mobile… d’oh!

  • reqest

For who was asking about… I’m having problems with missing sms too.
I’m using SMS Popup and the standard sms android application. I can read the message once through SMS Popup, after that I cannot find it anymore inside conversation thread.
This just appens sometimes and I still have no idea why.
I’m also using SMS Backup… maybe it could be related.

Apart from this issue, Cyanogen 4.2.9.1 is fantastic!
    Really. Thanks ;)

  • Wes

Great work here Cyan. Fastest yet. I really do love this rom. I laugh at a few acquaintances who still are stock.

I had an issue with google-maps. But I have had multiple issues with the nav-abled maps. Just reinstalled it.

Also get the missing icons from the desktop sometimes. So I just use the drawer. A minor inconvenience at best!

    Great work man! Merry Xmas

  • zendick

anyone know whow to fix an eaten ext partition, 4.2.9.1 ate my sd card, fat part is readable directly in a windows box but nothing else is.

  • zmesler

    @ Paul
First clean up your swap and ext3 partitions. Put DRC83_base_defanged ROM and CM Update on your SD (fat 32 paRTITION) Then wipe once or twice. Install DRC83_base_defanged then CM update and then reboot (do not reboot between installing DRC83_base_defanged and CM Update). After that you are ready to go. Enjoy
