Just a quick update..

September 30th, 2009

I’ve been working on getting my source trees on Github in shape so that anyone can build a basic CyanogenMod system. Some small parts still need added but things are looking good there.

I’m also continuing to examine the backup/restore option for the proprietary bits necessary to operate your device, so I can simply ship open-source code only. I believe this is well within the license and the spirit of the ADP1 and ION devices.

A lot of people are helping to work many of these issues out, notably the guys from Google (Dan and JBQ) who manage the open-source project. Some great discussion and initiatives are happening like the Open Android Alliance and the Replicant projects. As much as it sucks to be sort of the “fall guy” for this, I can take it. Let’s fix the problems and move on.

Expect more from me by the weekend!

  • Steve

Awesome news! Thanks for your continued desire for making AOSP better and better… I don’t think I could have handled it as well as you have – again, a tip of the hat, sir!

I just wanted to say thank you for everything you have done for the community. I have been using only your mods since your 3.0 line, without ever looking back. Your professionalism and dedication put far and beyond the rest, at least IMHO. I am a noob at all this stuff, but was able to get my CM1(er…g1) rooted and all the good stuff put on bc of great sites like xda and bc of devs like yourself. I am extremely interested in learning how to build ROMs and/or themes for the g1. My question is how difficult of a process is this? Is it something that a somewhat noob like myself can learn to do? I was wondering if maybe you can offer some insight or point me in the right direction as you have really have inspired me to at least try and tackle this. I’ve been pretty self sufficient and learned most of the hacking stuff just from xda threads, but I’m not too sure where to start off for something like this. I really would like to start making some sort of contribution to this great community if at all possible. I thank you for your time, help and dedication. Keep going strong dude!!!!

  • Dan Glover

So, so good to hear!! Can’t wait :)

  • http://paolo.sammicheli.net Paolo Sammicheli

Thank you so much for all the work you’re doing. You rock!

  • joners

Fantastic news, really glad to hear that the google devs are working with you on this. Keep up the fantastic work and know that the community will always support you!

  • Chris

    Great attitude, keep it up!

  • Andrés

Thanks Cyanogen! I’m confident we’re all gonna pull through this and emerge stronger than before.

  • germy

Good to have some updated news, this last week and a half has been a roller coaster! I mean how long had all of us been waiting for 4.2? And then this happened…I finally gave in last nite and put on 4.1.11.1 cause I really wanted to see the new market (no let downs there!) I really respect the way you’ve handled this Cyanogen, first class! You’ve got our support

Glad to see that the spirit lives on and that bigger, better things might come out of all of this. Thanks for taking such a high road in this matter.

  • http://iLikeMyiPhone.com Kiran

I am hoping Google includes you in their open source team. How can they send you a cease and desist order? I am hoping Google doesn’t have an Apple face when it comes to hacking the device.

Anyway, great job as always buddy! Without you, my G1 would have ended in someone else’s hands long back!

You are so awesome for persevering, Cyanogen. I would say that you deserve to be compared to this guy:

  • emp0wer

Have you seen ‘system app backupper’ on the market?

  • Eric

Way to keep at it, man. I knew the Android Community wouldn’t stay down for long!

  • Craig

You are an inspiration to us all, not everyone would have handled this situation so objectively and professionally. Just wanted to say thanks for everything.

  • http://gl0rify.com Stefing

Great news – I can’t imagine Apple ever helping out at all!

  • Tom

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date. Looking forward to test the fruits of your labour… My build system is waiting patiently ;-)

  • pascanu

I feel that this is going to take some time but it will turn out into something better, greater than the current “mods”.
I will definatelly donate (again) once this starts materializing. Keep it up Steve, you are one of a kind. (I’m sure it’s hard for you, especially now that everybody has so high expectations).

  • http://blog.jl42.de Jakob Lenfers

I’m very grateful for your work. I didn’t buy an open phone platform, to be pressured into using a illegal platform if I want certain features. (I don’t know how, but battery life doubled with your mod compared to 1.5…)

  • maria lindell

Thank you so much….you are displaying what a great community can do with a great leader as yourself, under crisis

  • http://coolcrisys.blogspot.com CoolCriSyS

Thank you for your perseverance and continued dedication to the modding community! I don’t think I would’ve been able to stick with my G1 if I hadn’t tried out your mod which actually made it bearable and much nicer to use.. Sorry you had to be the one targeted in all this legal drama, but your reaction to it all is admirable!

  • gst

Is backup/restore really a good idea? Wouldn’t be download/restore easier – with the advantage that users are able to use the most recent software? Firmware updates are usually available on the Web, so why not just use a simple script the extracts the Google software from firmware images?

  • JoeyAndroid

Glad things are working out. The community needs people like you to help Android to continue to grow and be very successful. Keep up the excellent work and passion and spirit.

  • Nick

Steve Kondik you are my hero…

  • knowfear

Yea, what everyone else said. You are a huge asset to the G1 experience!

  • .bane126

    Amazing. You rock.

  • Emmett

Thanks for you hard work and effort, keep it up. You da man!

  • Akashwani

Keep up the good work in great spirit!
    You rock!

  • kevin

With how coolly and professioally you have handled this, you are absolutely my hero. You’ll definetly be getting a beer from me soon, and someday ill get over my brick phobia and run your mods on my magic…..

What can I say, rooting my phone terrifies me

  • Phamous

    you’re freaking great!

  • JoelOFH

I am ecstatic you’ve chose to continue your excellent work.

While I look up to Google as a company, they had really ruffled my feathers by sending you the C&D letter. Google is all about innovation and user-friendly coding. However, they seem to be holding the flourishing Android community back with their legal threats.

I have been promoting Android to everyone. I have three friends that own the G1 and/or MyTouch just because of your ROMs (yes, really). Now, because of the C&D, I have egg on my face.

Please, keep the impressive work up. :)

  • skweints

I wouldn’t worry so much about being the “fall guy”. If I were you, I’d take it as a compliment. Your releases were the most popular because you were the brightest of the bright ROM modders and, in my opinion, the most honest, professional, and real one out of us all. Hell, perhaps Google picked you because they knew you could take it and work reasonably with them.

It sparked what I think really needs to happen with the Android platform, making it completely open source. Now we just need some hardware companies to start making phone parts with global standards like they do our PC’s, and we’d really be all set! :-)

  • zhillyz

So am I right in thinking(sorry for maybe not being as quick on the uptake as some :p) that we are all now waiting on a legal only the proper open source included custom ROM?

Meaning that my best bet would be to not try changing my current Modaco ROM for something potentially better? And await the “bare-bones” ROM from “the man” everyone cant stop talking about ^^(kudos btw) Cyanogen. As this will probably be the most up-to-date bug free fastest bestest ROM anyway?

    Thank you kindly =]

  • imhotep

    Thank you so much!

  • http://www.passionfruit.co.nz Ezra

    Superb.

  • Fugita

Steve I am not working now but once I am I plan on buying you a few cases of beer! You rock and I am glad you didn’t give up!

Can’t wait for the build system and thx for keeping at it!

  • http://www.jumy.es Jumy Elerossë

Thanks for all your hard working

  • Santosh

Looks like T-mobile is giving out the donuts! May be your work actually forced someone to act and provide newer releases! Keep the technology front moving forward. Great work!

  • brie987

Thank you so for all your work. I started to look for a new phone until your Mod and the easy “one click” rooting. Both easy and my G1 was reborn. Yes I did $how my appreciation and will again. Thank you so much from a Noob enduser!
